From Tirana Airport: Where to Go First

Landing in Tirana? Here are the best ways to start your trip by car, whether you head south, north or stay near the city.

Most Albania trips begin with the same question: do you head straight into Tirana, go directly to the coast, or point the car north and start moving straight away? That first decision shapes the whole first day more than people expect.

This is the part worth planning before you fly. The right pick-up point, first-night base and timing can turn arrival day into the start of the trip instead of a blur of queues, paperwork and second-guessing.

What Actually Happens After You Land

Tirana International is small enough to move through fairly quickly, but busy enough that several flights can land close together. You clear passport control, collect your bags and step into an arrivals hall where exchange counters, SIM stands and rental desks all compete for attention.

If you have already booked, that first hour is usually simple. If you have not, it is easy to end up comparing prices, deposits and insurance terms while tired and rushed. That is exactly why arrival day works better when the decision is already made.

Airport Pick‑Up vs City Pick‑Up

You have two workable options in Tirana: collect the car at the airport as soon as you land, or spend the first night in the city and pick it up the next day. Neither is automatically better. It depends on when you land, how fresh you feel and what your first real stop is.

Airport pick-up makes most sense when you land in daylight and want to get moving straight away. City pick-up works better if you arrive late, want a car-free first evening, or would rather get a feel for Tirana on foot before dealing with traffic.

First‑Night Base #1: Staying in Tirana

If your flight lands late, or you prefer easing into a trip rather than driving straight off, Tirana is the easiest first-night base. Taxi into the city, drop the bags, eat late, walk the centre and start properly the next morning when you are rested.

It also gives you time to do Tirana the right way first. Cafés, Bunk’Art, Skanderbeg Square, the New Bazaar and the cable car all work better when you are not thinking about where the car is parked.

First‑Night Base #2: Going Straight to the Coast

If you land in the morning or early afternoon and your brain is already in beach mode, heading straight for the coast is a very workable day-one move. Durrës is the easy option. Vlorë is longer, but still realistic if you land early enough and feel fresh.

The payoff is obvious. Day two starts with the sea already there. Instead of using your first full day to get south, you are already on the route and can keep moving from the coast.

First‑Night Base #3: Heading North to Shkodër

If the north is the main reason you came, going straight to Shkodër can make a lot of sense. The drive is straightforward, the city itself is an easy first stop, and by the next morning you are already much better placed for Lake Shkodër, Rozafa or the road towards Theth.

This option works best when you land with enough daylight left to enjoy the drive without rushing it. It is less about squeezing extra distance into day one and more about waking up closer to the part of the country you actually came to see.

Matching Your Arrival Time to the Right Pick‑Up

The thing that quietly ruins a lot of first days is bad timing. Land too late for the pick-up you chose and you create stress immediately. Book a city pick-up too cautiously and you can waste half the next morning when you could already be moving.

Think about the flight, the likely delays, your energy level after landing and how much daylight you want left for the drive. Where you collect the car matters. When you collect it matters just as much.

Why Compare Before You Land

Walking up to the first available desk in arrivals means working with whatever that one supplier has left at that moment. You still have to figure out deposit rules, mileage, insurance and whether the pick-up location actually suits the first part of your trip.

Comparing in advance is what gives you control. You can look at airport and city pick-up options side by side, check opening hours, filter by the terms that matter to you and book the option that fits your route before you are tired and standing in a queue.

Turning Day One into Part of the Trip, Not Just Logistics

Done badly, the first day in Albania becomes queues, paperwork and second-guessing. Done well, it becomes the first real decision of the trip: city tonight, sea tonight or north tonight.

That is the value of planning it before you land. Match the pick-up to the flight, match the first-night base to the route, and day one stops feeling like admin and starts feeling like the trip itself.
