Driver Requirements

Q&A’s about who can drive, which licences are accepted, age limits and what you need to bring to the rental desk.

To pick up a car you will normally need:

  • valid driving licence for the main driver

  • passport or national ID (depending on citizenship and location)

  • credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit (sometimes a debit card if the supplier accepts it)

  • your booking confirmation or voucher

Some rental companies may ask for extra documents, such as proof of address or a second card. Always check the Driver Requirements and Rental policies for your chosen offer and on your voucher before you travel.

Age limits are set by each rental company, not by AutoZone.al, and they can vary by car group.

Typically:

  • there is a minimum age (often around 21–25)

  • there may be a maximum age (for example 60–65)

  • young or senior drivers may pay an additional fee

The exact age limits and any extra fees are listed in the Driver Requirements or Rental policies for each offer. If you are close to the minimum or maximum age, always check those details before you book.

It depends on:

  • the country that issued your licence, and

  • the rental company’s own rules.

Many suppliers accept EU and UK licences without an IDP. Drivers from some other countries may be required to carry an International Driving Permit in addition to their national licence.

On AutoZone.al, always check the Driver Requirements for your offer. If the rental company says an IDP is required, you must obtain it before travelling; without it, they can refuse to hand over the car.

Rental companies usually accept licences that:

  • are valid for the full rental period, and

  • are clearly readable (Latin alphabet or accompanied by an accepted translation/IDP).

In addition, most suppliers require that you have held your licence for a minimum period (for example 1–2 years). The exact rules for each offer are shown under Driver Requirements.

If your licence is from outside the EU/EEA or is not in the Latin alphabet, pay particular attention to whether an IDP or translation is required.

If your licence uses a non‑Latin script (for example Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, etc.), many rental companies require:

  • an International Driving Permit, or

  • an official translation of your licence into English or another accepted language.

This is because staff at the rental desk must be able to read your name, dates and categories clearly. If the Driver Requirements for your offer mention an IDP or translation, you must bring it together with your original licence; otherwise the rental company may refuse the rental at pick‑up.

Usually no. In most cases the main driver must:

  • be the person who signs the rental agreement, and

  • present a credit card in their own name for the deposit.

Using someone else’s card (even from a partner or family member) is normally not accepted. If the cardholder wants to pay, they usually need to be added as the main driver or an additional driver, depending on the supplier’s rules.

Check the Prices, Payments & Deposits information and the rental company’s Rental policies before booking if you are unsure.

Additional drivers must usually:

  • meet the same age and licence rules as the main driver

  • be present at the rental desk with their original licence

  • be listed on the rental agreement

Most suppliers charge an extra fee per additional driver, payable at the desk. You can often add extra drivers when booking or directly at pick-up.

People who are not listed on the contract should not drive the car, as this can affect insurance and liability. For exact rules and fees, check the Rental policies for your chosen offer.

No. Only the main driver and any additional drivers listed on the rental agreement are allowed to drive the car.

If someone who is not on the contract drives the car and there is an accident or damage:

  • the rental company can treat this as a breach of the rental agreement, and

  • insurance or protection may not cover the incident.

If you think more people might need to drive, it is safer to add them as additional drivers at pick‑up, as long as they meet the Driver Requirements and bring their licences.

Yes. Many rental companies have young driver and senior driver rules.

These can include:

  • higher minimum ages for certain car groups

  • age‑related fees added per day or per rental

  • stricter rules or different insurance excesses for some age ranges

The exact age bands and fees are shown in the Driver Requirements and Rental policies for each offer. If you are close to the lower or upper age limits, always check this information carefully before you book.

Most rental companies require that:

  • you have held your licence for at least a minimum number of years (for example 1–2 years), and

  • your licence is valid for the entire rental period.

If your licence was issued very recently, or will expire soon, you must check the Driver Requirements for your chosen offer. If the supplier requires a longer holding period or a validity beyond your return date, they may refuse the rental at pick‑up.

When in doubt, contact the rental company or partner named on the offer before booking and ask them to confirm whether your licence will be accepted.
