Rental Policies
The fuel policy explains how much fuel should be in the tank when you collect the car and how the car must be returned.
Common fuel policies include:
- Full-to-full: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full.
- Same-to-same: you return the car with roughly the same fuel level as at pick-up.
- Prepaid fuel or full-to-empty: you may pay for fuel in advance and return the car under the supplier’s rules.
If you return the car with less fuel than required, the rental supplier may charge you for missing fuel plus a service fee.
Always check the fuel policy before booking and again on your voucher.
Some rentals include unlimited mileage, while others have a daily or total mileage/kilometre limit.
If your rental has a limit:
- the limit should be shown in the offer details or rental conditions,
- extra distance may be charged at a per-mile or per-kilometre rate,
- the supplier may check the distance when the car is returned.
If you are planning a long route, check whether the offer includes unlimited mileage before booking.
Cross-border travel and ferry use are always subject to the rental supplier’s rules.
Some suppliers:
- allow travel to selected neighbouring countries,
- require written permission before travel,
- charge an extra cross-border fee or ferry fee,
- allow it only for certain car groups,
- do not allow cross-border or ferry use at all.
These rules are shown in the offer details, rental conditions, confirmation or voucher.
If you plan to drive into another country, cross a border, visit an island, or take the car on a ferry, check the rules before booking. Do not assume it is allowed because the destination is nearby.
Driving outside the permitted area or using a ferry without approval can affect your cover, deposit and rental agreement.
Yes. Rental agreements usually include restrictions on how and where the car can be used.
These may include rules about:
- off-road driving,
- unpaved roads or restricted road types,
- border crossings,
- ferry use,
- commercial use,
- racing, towing or dangerous goods,
- driving in areas not allowed by the supplier.
Breaking these rules can affect your cover and may make you personally responsible for damage, recovery costs or other charges.
Always check the rental conditions before booking if your route includes rural roads, mountain areas, islands, border crossings or unusual driving conditions.
A one-way rental means picking up the car in one location and returning it to another.
Some suppliers allow one-way rentals within the same country or internationally. Others restrict them.
A one-way rental may include a one-way fee because the supplier may need to move the car back to its original location.
If one-way rental is allowed, the fee is usually shown during the booking process when you select different pick-up and drop-off locations.
Before booking, check that the drop-off location, one-way fee and rental conditions are clear.
Most offers show a car category with wording such as “or similar”.
This means you are booking a car group, not a guaranteed exact model. The rental supplier may provide a different car in the same group, with similar size, class, transmission and features.
Only offers clearly marked as a guaranteed model are tied to a specific car. These are less common.
If you are offered a lower category at pick-up, speak to the rental desk before signing the rental agreement and refer to your voucher.
If the booked car category is not available at pick-up, the rental supplier will usually try to provide a similar or higher category car.
If this is not possible, they may offer another available option.
The solution depends on the supplier’s availability and rental terms. If the alternative does not match your booking, discuss it with the rental desk before signing the rental agreement.
Do not accept or sign for a car if the conditions, price or category are not clear.
Smoking rules are set by the rental supplier and can vary.
Many suppliers treat smoking as a cleaning issue and may charge a cleaning fee if there is smoke smell, ash or damage inside the vehicle.
Before pick-up, check your voucher and rental conditions. If the car already smells of smoke or has interior damage when you collect it, take photos and report it to the rental desk before leaving.
Pet rules depend on the rental supplier.
Some suppliers allow pets if the car is returned clean. Others may restrict pets or charge a cleaning fee.
If you plan to travel with a pet:
- check the rental conditions before booking,
- use a carrier or seat cover where possible,
- do not leave pets unattended in the car,
- return the car clean and free of hair, odour or damage.
If the car is returned with hair, odour, stains or damage, cleaning or repair charges may apply.
Each offer should include rental conditions, important information or supplier terms before booking.
These may cover:
- fuel policy,
- mileage or kilometre limits,
- deposit and excess,
- payment card rules,
- driver age and licence requirements,
- pick-up and return rules,
- cross-border and ferry restrictions,
- one-way rental rules,
- optional extras,
- local charges,
- cancellation rules.
Always open and read the rental conditions before confirming your booking. The rental agreement you sign at the desk is based on the supplier’s terms and the details shown for your reservation.
