Rental Policies

Q&A’s about fuel, mileage, where you can drive, one-way rentals and other important rules set by the rental companies you book with.

The fuel policy describes how much fuel should be in the tank at pick‑up and how you must return the car.

Common types include:

  • Full‑to‑full – you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full.

  • Same‑to‑same – you return the car with roughly the same fuel level.

  • Less common policies (for example full‑to‑empty) may involve prepaying fuel and returning the car empty.

If you return the car with less fuel than required, the rental company can charge you for the missing fuel, plus a service fee, according to their Rental Policies. Always check the fuel policy before you book and again on your voucher.

Some rentals include unlimited kilometres, while others have a daily or total kilometre limit.

If your rental has a mileage limit:

  • the limit will be shown in the offer details and Rental Policies, and

  • additional kilometres may be charged at a per‑km rate if you exceed the limit.

If you are planning a long route around Albania or across borders, check whether the offer includes unlimited kilometres/mileage or what the limit and extra‑km charges are before booking.

Cross‑border and ferry use is always subject to the rental company’s own rules. Some suppliers:

  • allow travel to specific neighbouring countries for an extra fee,

  • allow it only for certain car groups, or

  • do not allow cross‑border or ferry use at all.

These conditions are listed in the Rental Policies for each offer. If cross‑border travel or ferries are important for your trip, you must:

  • check the policy before booking, and

  • confirm any required permissions and fees directly with the rental company named on your voucher.

Driving outside the allowed territory or using ferries without permission can affect cover and may breach the rental agreement.

Yes. Rental agreements usually include rules about:

  • road types where you are not allowed to drive (for example off‑road tracks),

  • regions or borders you cannot cross,

  • using the car for commercial purposes, racing, towing, or carrying dangerous goods.

Breaking these rules may mean you are personally responsible for any damage or costs, even if you have additional cover.

The list of restrictions is part of the rental company’s Rental Policies and contract. If you plan to use the car in unusual conditions (for example rough roads to remote villages), check those rules carefully and, if needed, ask the supplier to confirm what is allowed.

one‑way rental means picking up the car in one location and returning it to another (for example Tirana to Vlorë).

  • Some rental companies allow one‑way rentals within Albania or internationally.

  • Many charge a one‑way fee to cover moving the car back to its original location.

  • One‑way options and any fees are shown in the search results or Rental Policies when you select different pick‑up and drop‑off locations.

If a one‑way is allowed, the fee is usually included in the total price shown when you confirm the booking. If it is not clearly shown, check with the rental company before you book.

Most offers show a car category with the note “or similar”. This means:

  • you are booking a car group, not a specific model, and

  • the rental company can provide any car in that group (same size, class and transmission).

Only offers that are clearly marked as “guaranteed model” are tied to a specific car; these are less common. The exact approach is explained in the supplier’s Rental Policies.

At pick‑up, if you are offered a different category than booked, speak to the rental company staff and refer to your voucher.

If the booked car category is not available at pick‑up, rental companies will normally:

  • provide a similar or higher category car at no extra cost, or

  • offer alternatives, depending on availability.

The way they handle these situations is described in their Rental Policies. The agreement about what you are entitled to in such cases is between you and the rental company named on your confirmation.

If you believe the offered alternative does not match your booking, discuss it with the staff at the desk before signing the rental agreement.

  • Smoking rules are set by the rental company and can vary by supplier.

  • Many rentals treat smoking as a cleaning issue and may charge a cleaning fee if there is smoke smell or ash in the vehicle.

  • If you are unsure, check your voucher and rental conditions before pick-up, or confirm with the rental desk.

  • If someone smokes in the car, document the condition at pick-up and return (photos) to avoid disputes.

  • Pet policies depend on the rental company. Some suppliers allow pets if the car is returned clean, others may restrict it or charge a cleaning fee.

  • If you plan to travel with a pet, check your voucher and rental conditions first.

  • Use a carrier or seat cover where possible and avoid leaving pets unattended in the car.

  • If the car is returned with hair, odor, or damage, cleaning fees may apply.

On AutoZone.al, each offer has an “Important information” or Rental Policies section. There you can see:

  • fuel and mileage rules

  • deposit and excess information

  • cross‑border and territorial limits

  • pick‑up and return rules (grace periods, out‑of‑hours)

  • age limits and driver requirements

  • any other key conditions

Always open and read this section before you confirm a booking. The detailed rental agreement you sign at the desk will be based on these policies and the rental company’s standard terms.
