Driver requirements

Driver Requirements

To collect the car, the main driver usually needs:

  • a valid driving licence,
  • a passport or national ID,
  • a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit,
  • the booking confirmation or voucher.

The main driver’s name should match the booking/voucher, driving licence and payment card requirements shown for the offer.

Some rental suppliers may ask for extra documents, such as proof of address, a second form of ID, or an International Driving Permit.

The exact requirements are shown in the offer details, Driver Requirements, Rental Policies, confirmation or voucher.

If you do not bring the required documents, the rental supplier may refuse to release the car and the booking may be treated as a no-show.

Age limits are set by the rental supplier and can vary by country, location, car group and offer.

Common rules include:

  • a minimum driver age,
  • a maximum driver age,
  • young driver fees,
  • senior driver fees,
  • restrictions on certain car groups.

The exact age limits and fees are shown in the offer details, Driver Requirements or Rental Policies.

If you are close to the minimum or maximum age limit, check the requirements carefully before booking.

It depends on:

  • the country where you are renting,
  • the country that issued your licence,
  • the language and alphabet used on your licence,
  • the rental supplier’s own rules.

Many suppliers accept EU and UK licences without an IDP. Drivers from some other countries may need an International Driving Permit in addition to their national licence.

If the offer details or voucher say an IDP is required, you must bring it with your original driving licence. Without it, the rental supplier may refuse to release the car.

Foreign licences are usually accepted if they are:

  • valid for the full rental period,
  • clearly readable,
  • accepted by the rental supplier,
  • supported by an IDP or official translation where required.

Some suppliers also require that you have held your licence for a minimum period, for example 1 or 2 years.

If your licence was issued outside the country where you are renting, check the Driver Requirements before booking. If the rules mention an IDP or translation, bring it with your original licence.

If your licence uses a non-Latin script, such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic or another alphabet, many rental suppliers require:

  • an International Driving Permit, or
  • an official translation of your licence.

The rental desk must be able to read your name, licence categories, issue date and expiry date clearly.

If the Driver Requirements mention an IDP or translation, bring it with your original licence. Without the required documents, the supplier may refuse the rental at pick-up.

Usually no.

In most cases, the main driver must present a credit card in their own name for the security deposit.

If the card belongs to someone else, even if that person is travelling with you, the rental supplier may refuse the rental at pick-up.

Before booking, check the card and deposit rules in Prices, Deposit & Extras and Rental Policies for the selected offer.

Additional drivers usually need to:

  • meet the same age and licence rules as the main driver,
  • be present at the rental desk,
  • show their original driving licence and ID,
  • be added to the rental agreement.

Most suppliers charge an extra fee for each additional driver. This fee is usually paid at the rental desk unless the booking flow says otherwise.

A person who is not listed on the rental agreement should not drive the car. If they do, cover may be affected and extra charges may apply.

No.

Only the main driver and any approved additional drivers listed on the rental agreement are allowed to drive the car.

If someone not listed on the contract drives the car:

  • this may breach the rental agreement,
  • cover or protection may not apply,
  • the supplier may charge extra fees,
  • you may be personally responsible for damage or costs.

If another person may need to drive, add them as an additional driver before they drive the car.

Yes. Many rental suppliers apply special rules for young drivers or senior drivers.

These may include:

  • higher minimum age limits for certain car groups,
  • age-related daily fees,
  • restrictions on premium or larger vehicles,
  • different deposit or excess rules,
  • stricter licence requirements.

The exact age bands and fees are shown in the offer details, Driver Requirements or Rental Policies.

If the driver is close to a lower or upper age limit, check the rules before booking.

It depends on the rental supplier’s rules.

Many suppliers require that:

  • you have held your licence for a minimum period, often 1 or 2 years,
  • your licence is valid for the full rental period,
  • your licence does not expire before the car is returned.

If your licence was issued recently or will expire soon, check the Driver Requirements before booking.

If the supplier requires a longer licence holding period or validity beyond the rental dates, they may refuse the rental at pick-up.
